Newswave

I am sure Trinity students are aware of the Tiger TV that is broadcast on Channel 14 throughout the university and on Channel 98* throughout San Antonio.

Tiger TV production crew seems to be putting in a lot of effort and no wonder, the quality of programs are improving. Most outstanding of all seems to be the News program that is presented in a very professional way and Miguel Guerra, one of the newsreaders always looks very confident and direct, no different than newsreaders/interviewers on national televisions.

Moreover, now these programs can also be watched online in high quality at http://newswave.blip.tv. Check it out.

*(or is it 96? I am not sure)

Counting Down the Days

I’ve been pretty busy over the past few weeks, and apparently so have the rest of the contributors as the last post was like a month ago.

Anyway, here’s a little update on the class of ‘13. We’re having to read a book called Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder and write a annotated bibliography on it. Okay, that’s not how I really wanted to spend my summer, but compared to my last few summer assignments from high school, this should be a breeze. The only thing I’m pissed about is that my friend going to Sewanee next year is reading the same book but doesn’t have to do the bibliography.

We were also supposed to receive our roommate and suitemate info last week, but everyone got an email explaining that they were delaying the notifications until the end of the month. This sucks for obvious reasons. Seriously, I’ve prayed every single night that I don’t get a bad roommate (i.e. doesn’t sleep, is obsessed with God, crackhead, is obsessed with guns, watches me while I sleep, becomes an alcoholic…there’s a lot of room for error). But I’m pretty sure at least one of my suitemates will be cool, and if not, I’m transferring.

Finally, I need to get a new laptop, and am pretty sure I’ll be investing in a 15 inchMacbook Pro. Reasons include screen size, memory, speed, appeal, and the fact that I’ll blend in with all other 9 million plus people at Trinity that have one. But the price is so damn steep, I’m surprised they don’t want the name of my first-born too.

So, cheers to two more months of freedom, I’ll see y’all in August.

This irks me to no end

Doesn’t religion preach tolerance and understanding, or did I miss something?

I just put together an extremely rudimentary database (for now a google docs spreadsheet) for TU students/profs/staff/alumni… that use twitter. I just wanted to give it a shot and determine whether people use it/find it helpful. If so, I will consider improving it substantially.

Check it out and add yourself: Twitter Database

Crazy?

Yes, it is. I was always under the assumption that the end of my senior year of high school would be stress-free. But I’m stuck in a perfect storm of stress or I was completely wrong about what the end means. Right now, I’m in the midst of AP exams (some of you might know them as IB),  attempting to dominate my senioritis, and attempting to fix a problem some of my douche-bag friends made with regards to beach week. Actually, now that I type this, it doesn’t seem so bad. I’m just in a ranting mood.

Anyway, I was scrolling around the discussion board on the Trinity Class of 2013 facebook group and came across a post titled “Who is Everyone?” I started skimming the numerous descriptions of my future classmates and came across a few common, consistent characteristics:

  • All of them are “really excited” about heading to Trinity next year, as am I
  • Most of them are really smart, but apparently don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re
  • Most of them don’t drink…I find this hard to believe, but hey, I’m from the hills of Virginy
  • None of them smoke…not a bad thing, but at my high school you can count the number of people who haven’t smoked weed on two hands
  • Some of them are really, really, really religious
  • Most of them play some type of sport
  • Music choices range from classical to Vampyre Weekend to techno. Not a lot of rap fans though, which worries me
  • Most of them don’t party, which REALLY worries me. I plan to study in college but Asher Roth has to be somewhat right, right?

Obviously the posts don’t represent everyone that will be walking the campus of Trinity with me in mid-August, but from the small group I’ve seen, there are going to be some big changes in store for me. So if you’ve got any suggestions for settling in or meeting up with similarily interested people, I need all the help I can get.

Oh, and for anyone that’s seen the new X-Men movie, can you explain what mutant power the asian guy had other than the “special” ability to jump high and shoot really accurately? Kobe Bryant can jump high and drop 81 in a game, but he’s not in the new X-Men movie. WTF?

Hello again

Haven’t had a chance or the inspiration to blog on here in a while. The inspiration still isn’t really there, so I’ll just ramble.

I started packing up my belongings today. I have a large cardboard box, and I’m gradually filling it. We got our storage unit today from what has to be the nicest couple in San Antonio. Poster Putty sticks to walls and is a pain to get off.

Twitter is still cool. I recently started a second account “@spurs_intern” as part of a recent project the web team has taken on. A bunch of people around the office have started their own corporate accounts, all as a way to reach the fans on a more personal level (and I would assume to stroke our own egos–I have 178 followers!!). For more info about these accounts, check this out.

Finals are coming up. I am not concerned. I feel kinda guilty because everyone else is freaking out and setting up refugee camps in the library. Should I be more worried?

I’ve been a little sick lately. We ruled out cancer and strep throat, which leads me to believe I have Swine Flu.

Playoffs came. Playoffs were busy. Playoffs ended quickly, giving me time to wipe the sweat from my brow and the tear from my eye.

I’m alone in my room right now. This doesn’t happen often in college. Can’t say I really like it. At home I spent a lot of time in my room, typically alone. I’ve completely forgotten how to do that.

Today my Macbook charger broke. I took it to the Apple Store at North Star Mall, but they didn’t have any appointment times. I proceed to the Apple Store at La Cantera, where it’s replaced quickly and painlessly for free. I then stopped for a second and realized how nice La Cantera was. I’ll definitely go back there this summer.

I’m out of ideas. Goodnight San Antonio.

Studying with the Gnome

Finals are here, which means it’s time to hit the library…. all the time.  While I don’t relish having to devote countless hours of my days studying during this time of the year, I do enjoy the peace of only having so much work to do when it’s all done.

But even better than that, I love to study with one of Trinity’s best kept secrets: the library’s Garden Gnome.  You can check it out at the circulation desk and keep it for two hours while you study.  It is supposed to bring you good luck on your exams.

So next time you need a fun study session, just go to the library, study, and check out the gnome.  You’ll be glad you did!

hello . . . . 2009

alright. this might seem a little terrible, maybe it was just the stress that everyone was facing with a delayed flight . . . but . . .

as much as i love flying southwest, and as much as i love the san antonio airport, when i flew home last friday (quite possibly the worst day to fly home, flight was delayed 4 hours . . . to HOUSTON) i saw something that i absolutely did not like.

sure. with security and threats these days, i understand that people can be subject to random screenings, but how random is this . . . .

we are standing in line to (finally) board the airplane. an african american man wearing scrubs (and he looks smart too!) is standing in the business boarding section (he flies a lot!!) and an elderly caucasian man is coming around with a cart that says “random screening in progress.”

so he stops at the scrub-wearing gentleman first and says “can i see your boarding pass and ID?” and then he checks it and continues walking.

then he stops an older asian lady (who i am standing next to) and asks to see her boarding pass and ID.

the last person that he stops to check is a huge man at the end of the A30s. he is african american and looks like he could beat almost anyone up (although he is not dressed like a gangster of any sort). so he asks to check his id and boarding pass as well.

that’s it. he checks three people. the only three minority people (well . . . excluding me, but of course i am the witness) in the first boarding group. what in the world. and there are plenty of other people around us, just not ones that are minorities.

today is april 26, 2009. and i can’t help to feel a little cheated by what happened last week. is it wrong to be a little angry?

of course you can say “oh, we live in texas . . .” but really, that’s no excuse.
i think it’s pretty RIDICULOUS
